My Winter Hair Care Routine

It’ll be no surprise to everyone that like with my skincare routine I do tend to change up my hair care routine depending on the season. I even change up the style I get my hair cut into depending on the season.. blunt cut for the summer and elegant layers for the winter… also yes my hair does grow fast enough that I can indeed cut layers into my hair and 6 months later get it all cut off into a perfect blunt cut without drastically altering the length.

Because it’s winter, I currently have VERY layered hair and am sporting some new curtain bangs (tbh I’m keeping these even for the summer) which does change my routine a little and impacts how I style it.

The biggest change between my winter and my summer routine is the amount of product that I tend to use. Not only is the winter air far more drying, but I also rarely let my hair air dry throughout the winter, so it’s constantly being dried out through blow drying and heat styling.

An overall change that I’ve made is I’ve switched from washing my hair every other day to every 3 days. There’s nothing to it, except my hair takes a long time to dry and I don’t love having to take an hour or two out of my day every other day to wash, dry and style it.

In Shower

In shower, I still use my Aveda Cherry Almond Shampoo and Conditioner as my regular shampoo and conditioner.

Once or twice a week – really depending on my dry my scalp is feeling – I’ll shampoo with the Briogeo Scalp Revival. I like to let this sit for 1-2 minutes, so I’ll take the time to wash my face.

If my scalp is really really dry I’ll use the Kerestase Specifique Shampoo and the Specifique Scalp Renewing Masque and follow it up with either the Initialiste Scalp and Hair Serum or the Briogeo Scalp Revival Serum. What I’ve been noticing is that the more I take care of my scalp the faster and healthier my hair seems to be growing.

I tend to not mask my hair too frequently, I don’t really have the patience to leave it on for 10 MINUTES in the shower… i just don’t have the time nor do I particularly enjoy getting out of the shower with the mask on and then trying to figure out how to wash it off later. Not my jam.

What I’ll try to do is once in a while put a hair mask in before I shower into dry hair (I weirdly find this works well) and will let it sit first and then shower it off. Unconventional but it works. The masque that I like to use is the Oribe Moisture and Control Deep Mask.

Post Shower

Right after the shower I like the wrap my hair up in a towel (not great I know but I’ve got a lot of hair tbh) and let it sit while I do my skin care routine and decide what to wear.

After I take it out of the towel, I’ll start with one pump of hair oil (right now I’m trying to use up my Morrocan Oil one) – my favourites are either the Olaplex Bonding Oil or the Oribe Gold Lust Nourishing Hair Oil – and start to run it through my hair while finger combing out as many knots as possible.

If my hair was REALLY dry going into the shower, I’ll put a leave in conditioner in while my hair is still slightly damp. I’m currently using the Aveda Cherry Almond Leave in Treatment, it’s not my favourite for texture (it leaves my hair feeling slightly sticky) but I adore the smell so I’ll put up with it.

Styling

I’ll almost always brush, section and blow out my hair no matter what I’m going to do with it after.

On days when I don’t have to go anywhere I’ll just blow my hair out and leave it be. On days when I need to go somewhere or want my hair curled, I’ll take the time to blow my hair into curls – you can find out how to do that here – and then I’ll curl my hair with a 1.25 inch curling wand.

Post- Styling

Since it’s the winter, I’m more drawn to polished perfect curls and blow outs so I try to use products to help keep the shape and the volume.

The first product I will always use no matter the season is the Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray, it’s my favourite product to add some hold and grit to my hair.

The following products are optional and are added dependent on what I’ll be doing that day.

If I know I’m going to be outside a lot I’ll add in a touch of the Oribe Anti-Humidity spray to help tame frizz and protect my style from the elements.

If my style is super polished curls, then I’ll give my hair a REALLY good spray with hairspray. I’ve got a couple I’m trying to use up that were gifted to me while I was working with Garnier, but my favourite is from Oribe it’s the super fine strong hold hairspray. If you can’t tell I love the Oribe styling products, they smell amazing and they have a few different textural finishes that suit how I like to wear my hair.

Between Washes

Between washes, especially when my hair has been styled, I like to add in a dry shampoo and a dry conditioner as and when I need it.

My strategy is typically to add in the dry shampoo all over my roots, do my makeup and then brush my hair really well to distribute the product nicely. My current dry shampoo is the Bumble and Bumble pret- a -powder. It provides amazing volume and leaves my hair looking refreshed. I also love the Oribe Dry Shampoo (shocker) and the Lorane Dry Shampoo. If I feel my hair needs a bit more of a pick me up, I’ll spray the Oribe Cote D’Azur Hair Refresher onto the mid-end section of my hair to soften up the hair and make it a little more touchable if the hairspray has gotten a bit *crispy*.

For days when I desperately need to restyle my hair, I’ll first start by generously spraying my hair the Oribe Mystify Restyling Spray. It’s honestly a lifesaver when theres not enough time to wash out the product from my hair and let’s me restyle the section that really need it! Once my hair is restyled, I’ll give it a hit with the Oribe Dry Conditioner and hair spray the restyled pieces again!

I try to avoid restyling my hair as much as possible opting for heatless second/third/sometimes fourth day styles like buns, braids etc. but if theres a dinner or an event, it’s hard to avoid.

I hope you guys enjoyed this hair care routine! It’s waaayyy more extra than my summer routine, but it’s because I want my styles to last and a polished look is FAR more maintenance than my summer beachy waves.
