With so much available to purchase how do you know what’s worth it and what isn’t? Everyone has a different opinion on what items are worth spending money on and as such full disclaimer, ALL the opinions on what I save vs. splurge on are my own opinion because I KNOW they are 100% different than a lot of what’s out there (in some cases).
Basic Tees:
Basic tees are a combo thing for me, I myself own a combination of inexpensive t-shirts and high-end ones. I would say if you can afford brands like James Pearse or Kit and Ace, then you should invest because the shirts I own from those two brands have lasted me significantly longer than my t-shirts from Zara and Aritzia.
White Button Downs:
INVEST. There is nothing worse than a button down that turns yellow, rips, or frays within the first couple washes. High-quality white shirts will withstand the test of time (with proper maintenance). In high-school, I had a uniform that required us to wear a dress shirt, and after having to wear the same 5-6 dress shirts over the course of a year or two, it’s quality over quantity.
Denim:
INVEST. Honestly… one pair of jeans that fit well, won’t stretch out and bag, the won’t tear after a month are SO worth it. When I was working at Aritzia, all of the girls working ALL wore Citizens of Humanity Rocket Skinny Jeans and it was a little competition between some of the older girls how long they’ve had their pair of jeans and how often they wore them. We are talking girls saying they wore their jeans 4-5 times a week for 3+ years. If you take care of your jeans they will last. Plus if you don’t want to spend the full ticket price, you can always pick up a pair during a sale at Aritzia, Revolve, Shopbop, Saks, Holts, etc.
Handbags:
INVEST. You can talk about how it’s not necessary… ya. ya. There is NOTHING more versatile than a basic high-quality handbag.
Stockings/Tights:
SAVE. OMG do you know how many times I’ve ripped a hole in a pair of Wolford tights… they are just not worth it. Buy a couple pairs the are inexpensive that will take you through the season then CHUCK THEM and start afresh.
Boots:
If they are black, leather, classic INVEST. You can wear a good pair of black boots in any season with so many different outfits.
If they are a fun colour, a unique style or an impractical fabric they save. Get a good dupe or an inexpensive version and save your wallet lest they get ruined or go out of style within the season.
Heels:
My same logic applies here if they are classic pieces, basics you will wear constantly invest. There is nothing like know that the shoes you are wearing are well made, high-quality materials and will withstand the test of time. If they are trendy pieces, save. You don’t want to invest in a pair of shoes that you won’t be able to get maximum wear out of them.
That’s my opinion on when you should save and splurge!
