February has almost come and gone, I feel like this month has just completely flown by. For those of us who are currently working, or soon to be starting work I wanted to put together my selections for a work wear capsule wardrobe to help you get out the door faster in the mornings so you have a little bit more time to sleep, eat, gym etc.
To start I think everyone needs a good white button down. It’s clean, crisp and can be worn with skirts, suits and jeans. It’s not the easiest maintenance item (you do have to press it the night before) but I think it’s the safest and the most classic piece.
I also think a lightweight crewneck knit sweater is another easy and classic item. Worn with tailored trousers and loafers for a simple everyday look, or with a skirt and some heels to dress it up. It’s the perfect cold weather item.
Tailored trousers are obviously next on the list. They are essential to the work wear wardrobe and are overall chic and sophisticated no matter the season.
I also think a midi skirt – either pencil, pleated etc. – is also a great work wear wardrobe staple. For the same reason as tailored trousers, they are season-less and can be worn so many different ways.
I also think a blazer is an important wardrobe staple. It can be plain or checked etc. but they are so necessary to throw on for meetings and can be very chic.
Moving on to footwear, I personally think that in your core capsule wardrobe you only need two shoes: A pair of black heels and a pair of black or neutral loafers. The reason being is that for day to day and when you are in office or need to walk around a lot a pair of loafers are comfortable but will still be in-line with work appropriate
Finally to round out your work wear capsule wardrobe I think you only REALLY need two types of outerwear, BUT because I live in Canada clearly there are three as you need a proper winter coat (we are talking -40 certified puffer jacket, with wind resistant coating, snuggly hood and waterproofing).
So the other two outwear pieces you need are 1) a trench coat and 2) a wool overcoat/peacoat. The trench coat will serve you in mild weather and the wool coat will take you through the cold weather (unless you live somewhere freezing cold, then please please please wear a proper winter jacket)
