Hello hello!
Today is the very first book club post for the A/W 20/21 Book Club! Today’s book is Tales From the Back Row: An Outsiders View From Inside the Fashion Industry. Since it was fashion month, it was too tempting to not pick a fashion book but as this name suggests it’s a third party view on the industry. Not exactly the Devil Wears Prada, but don’t worry the book is full of a healthy amount of DWP references.
I loved the book and I absolutely flew threw it. Seriously, I listened to it in 4 and a halfish hours while painting a room. Like always, I listened to the book on audible at 1.5x speed (not sponsored) so the pace of the narration better matched my typical reading pace…. seriously though, is it just me that finds narrations of books slow?
This book is a series of personal essays and anecdotes from the authors perspective chronicling her time working in the fashion industry. While it’s not exactly a salacious gossipy tell-all a-la real life Devil Wear’s Prada. It’s more of a slightly comedic observation on the fashion industry.
I personally loved Amy’s perspective on navigating her way through the fashion industry, especially when she was describing her first fashion week and the Alexander Wang show she went to where everybody was obsessing over ripped tights. She shines a light into the absurdity of the industry.
Next Book: Girl, Serpent, Thorn
Length 327 Pages
There was and there was not, as all stories begin, a princess cursed to be poisonous to the touch. But for Soraya, who has lived her life hidden away, apart from her family, safe only in her gardens, it’s not just a story.
As the day of her twin brother’s wedding approaches, Soraya must decide if she’s willing to step outside of the shadows for the first time. Below in the dungeon is a demon who holds knowledge that she craves, the answer to her freedom. And above is a young man who isn’t afraid of her, whose eyes linger not with fear, but with an understanding of who she is beneath the poison.
Soraya thought she knew her place in the world, but when her choices lead to consequences she never imagined, she begins to question who she is and who she is becoming…human or demon. Princess or monster.
