Santa Monica

The first stop on our road trip to California was Santa Monica/ Los Angeles. We spent two days here staying at the J.W. Marriott Le Marigot. I’ve never been to LA before, but both of my parents have been on numerous separate occasions, so I got to “lead” the way a little bit. A.K.A armed with Pinterest, and Instagram I set out a series of destinations for us to hit while we were in the city.

What I always do or at least try to do, is to explore the neighbourhood where I am going to be staying or get some food. Time difference + 7:30am EST wake up + the 5 hour flight = HUNGER.

First stop: SUGAR FISH, ok guys, truth moment. I was so pumped to go to Sugar Fish, Hey Claire raves about it, Arika Sato raves about it, so it must be pretty damn good sushi. It is good sushi, some of the best in fact but the price point for what you get isn’t what you would expect. Sugar Fish has a very minimalistic menu, with a choice of three set meal size options or ordering off the a la carte menu. Our server recommended we go with a set meal as well as informed us of the restaurants no additions policy meaning, no extra sauce, no subs, nothing. What if we run out of Soya Sauce????? Yikes. The idea that we might be facing half a meal without sufficient sauce supply did little to deter us, and we ordered. The Sushi came out in rounds where everyone in the restaurant received that same particular dish at the same time, no matter when you ordered it. The idea is to serve the freshest dish which is achieved by the chef preparing only one type of fish at a time.

Where to go:

The Pier is one of the first places you should go visit if you have never been to Santa Monica, it’s touristy but well worth the experience (and the pictures if you are Instagram obsessed like I am).

Further down the boardwalk is an adult playground of sorts, which is a good place to people watch. There are always people swinging across the bars or learning how to pull off acrobatic stunts.

Also, don’t forget to visit the 3rd street promenade, there is tons of shopping and really good food, as well as Ocean Drive for more restaurants.
